Day 2

I'm not going to lie, we're all a little tired and cranky and fed up of the car and it's only day 2. I thought that adding on an hour or two to the estimated travel time to account for three kids would be enough. But today's 5 1/2 hour trip took 9 hours, which is why we didn't arrive at our hotel until 8:30pm.

Everyone is extremely relieved that we will be spending tomorrow exploring Glacier national park and not driving again. On the plus side we got to see a lot of Montana, which is spectacular.

After Mike and I both managed to get a gorgeous run in on the Centennial trail this morning, we set off from Coeur D'Alene and crossed the Idaho panhandle for 70 miles before entering Montana.

I almost missed our arrival, which was the source of some contention:

We took I-90 to St Regis and stopped at the previously blogged gift shop before heading north on Route 135 towards Glacier.

Where we had the world's windiest picnic at Rainbow lake.:

And then basically we were driving on wide open road like this:

Until we rounded a bend and saw my favorite sight of the day, Flathead Lake:

We made it into Glacier national park for just an hour before we went onto our hotel but we did see McDonald Lake (and falls) but it was too overcast to get any really good photos. You'll just have to trust me that it was a lot better in person.

We had dinner at McDonald Lake lodge as people (namely me) were starting to throw temper tantrums. This was also where we continued our longstanding debate over whether an empty chair at our table is for God (Andrew) or Mr. Nobody (Heidi), which pretty much sums up the religious views of our two children.

You can get a sense of how pumped I was at this point to still have an hour and a half left of the journey.

But then the amazing thing about Montana is just when you think you'd rather throw yourself out of a moving car than listen to one more Frog and Toad story, you get to see this: a herd of bison by the road:

And then this sunset over the plains, which we we saw as we arrived in Browning and was almost, but not quite, as amazing as finally seeing the sign for our hotel.

600 miles down....

  1. Heath is just the best in these pictures. There's no posing with him. He just does his thing, "recording events for posterity" be damned. While the rest of you might smile for the camera, he's the one who reveals the true emotions of the moment!

Thank you for changing the posting settings. xoxo

  2. That looks like you saw some very cool stuff. Why is it taking you so much longer than your estimates though for driving? If Heath's unwillingness to wear anything but a t-shirt and shorts regardless of the weather is bothering you then feel free to make him wear a hoodie or a jacket (he has at least one or the other). Even after he says "I am not cold" for the 476th time.

  3. Heath is great , you leave the kid alone. No one wants to be stuck between my two kids for hours, I tried it for about 30 mins and cried Uncle. Your son is a saint.

  4. Delays are mainly due to a lot of stopping and starting and strapping everyone in at which point someone has to go pee and then we go 5 mins and I see something I want to take a picture of and the process starts all over again.
